It's from the 19th Centuary so "scary" mgiht have been a litttle bit scarier back then than now. ;) I'm not sure how good teh English translation is but it's definitely a classic and in a way still topical. (Of course, you could try it in German but that's hard...) Personally, I'd recommend it.
