I didn't read the series until this past January, and ended up devouring it in a week. I too love magical portal stories and misfit kids, so this was pretty much aimed at me.

(Which will be abundantly clear in more ways if you read the rest of the series. Which you should do anyway, because it's a lot of fun.)
