Thoughts on Facebook
Apr. 29th, 2007 02:07 amSo yes. Facebook is popular, everybody has one, everybody wastes a lot of time on it. Therefore the initial reaction would seem to be too cool to like it. Or at least too cool to pay much attention to it.
But I am OCD about my social networking sites. I like to keep my Facebook tidy. I like my information to be complete, accurate and current (minus having put "Game Club Slutting" instead of "English" as my major). I delete people (gasp!), especially since they put in the bloody news feed and if people I don't care about update I still have to see it.
I also like to make sure I add my actual friends, despite that there is no non-awkward time to add somebody. I don't care. There's no point having random acquaintances that I never contact as my Facebook "friends" if I don't have any of the people I might actually want (or need) to contact. Because that's really the point--to use it to contact people. The stalking stuff is just something that happens because it's the Internet. I like being able to message somebody even if I haven't arsed myself to get their phone number, email address, AIM screenname, or any other method of contacting someone that doesn't rely on actually running into them at an opportune time. And since I almost never, ever, get my friends' contact information unless I absolutely need it, this is quite useful. I admit that half the time I don't know my own friends' last names, but so far this has not hindered me from finding people.
I also like being able to tell people "my number/screenname/email address is on Facebook" instead of writing things down for people, because I'm a lazy bastard.
However, I do think Facebook needs a write-in box for the Political Views like they have for religious views. Especially since a word like "liberal" has so many possible meanings that they might as well just not have it at all.
I also think they need to add "Ninja" and "Pirates" to the "Interested In" option. Gender is a boring basis to be interested in people on.
I shouldn't journal at two in the morning. Goodnight.
