Shippin' up to Boston
Jun. 15th, 2011 07:58 pmI am all moved into my sublet in Brighton, and man, does it feel weird not to be living in Worcester anymore. I've lived there for five years; even though NJ was always "home" more or less (home is where your credit cards are billed to), Worcester was... well, let's just say making snarky jokes about living in Worcester has become almost as much a part of my identity as making snarky jokes about being from New Jersey. New Jersey is still "home," and has never not been, so having completely moved out of a "home" area (rather than just from residence to residence within it) is a new thing for me. And I miss it, dirty crime-ridden post-industrial wasteland that it is.
On the upside, Brighton is adorable, and being only a short T ride away from work in the shadow of the Boston Library makes me feel all grown-up and fashionable. I am currently living two of my life's dreams: to live in Boston and work as a proofreader. Seriously, being a proofreader has actually been one of my dream jobs since I was eight or so and found a typing error in one of my Redwall books and was all like "Don't they have people whose job it is to make sure this doesn't happen? ...Can I have that job? I WOULD BE SO GOOD AT IT, YOU GUYS."
The fact that I probably could have actually done most of this job when I was eight and am therefore probably not making the most out of all the stuff I learned getting my fancy expensive degree concerns me not at all. I was a very language-artsfully smart eight-year-old, and I like, for the moment, having a job that is mentally not-ultra-challenging enough that I can come home and be like "Yeah, I have enough brain left to write for hours!" Although I am still trying to get this week's freelancing assignments out of the way, so I have not actually made the progress on my You, Interactive draft that I am absolutely, positively going to actually do by the end of this weekend. (My goal is to finish the draft in time to send it off to Liz for her birthday in August.)
In other exciting newses: Ren Faire on Saturday! Also, my sublet has HBO, so I got to watch last week's Game of Thrones as it was actually airing. (I felt like I was living a life of shameless extravagance; I have never had HBO before even though I follow several HBO shows.) Also too, am rereading the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series. Serious fake-medievalism binge has been going on for a while over here at Life of Me; mayhaps I need help.
Off to freelance the night away, because I am so exciting and glamorous.
