ZOMFG THIS BOOK IS AWESOME GO BUY IT NOW.

That is all.

...Um, no. A bit more seriously. Faeries aren't much of a popular subject in the YA fantasy novel realm anymore, which is a pity, 'cos some good old school kickass faeries have almost unlimited potential for sheer awesome. And I love faeries. And they deserve better to be regulated strictly to visual art, because faery lore is more than just "zomg so there's this race of cute little girls with wings".

There is Holly Black's "Tithe" series, of which I have only read "Tithe." It was pretty good. The "Asian and blonde!" thing kind of annoyed me (Mary-Sue alarm going EEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEE on that one), but otherwise, it was so good to see faeries revisited in writing. So many awesome old legends that people forgot about because they involve faeries with POWER.

FAERIES OF DREAMDARK BLOWS TITHE OUT OF THE WATER. AND EATS IT WHEN I COMES BACK DOWN. AND PICKS ITS TEETH WITH A HARPOON.

So far it's only one book and only about four hundred pages, which few authors seem to be able to tell a story in anymore 'cos they're trying to be epic, but it is still SO EPIC. So much more epic than many longer stories. It has everything: a whole beautiful elaborate fantasy world, satirical mankind-bashing, djinns, evil forces trying to unmake the world, adorable (and vaguely Scottish?) dialogue, talking crows, lots of big important universe magic involving threads&tapestries&things (the weaving thing just never gets old, does it?), angry old gods, birthrights and destinies, afterlives, fates worse than death, awesomely gross monsters, and a little bit of awkward young'un romance/UST (but only a little... just enough to be cute). And it's cute and funny and thrilling and epic and really not cheesy or cliche at all. And I LOVE IT.

I love it too!

I'm Laini's husband (and artist on the book's cover & interiors) and every couple of days since the book's recent release I'll Google the title and see what people may be saying about it, and WOW (!!) thanks for saying such enthusiastic things about Laini's book and all of the great (in my humble opinion!) details within. She's out and about right now but I'll show this review to her right away when she gets home and I know she'll appreciate your kind words.

Hopefully word of mouth on blogs like this & reviews on book sites will help spread the word. It's so hard to not get lost amidst the countless other novels coming out (especially as a first-time author), so again, a HUGE thanks for contributing such enthusiastic praise! :)

Warm regards,
