If you have set up a career where your entire job and persona is all about truth and fighting for the little guy, then you better be prepared to take it as hard as you give it. If you’re not prepared, then your entire job and persona is actually about feeling like a big man by exploiting the trauma of the little guy for swirls of attention and adoration. Either you are for justice, or you are for misery tourism. -Harriet J, on Michael Moore, here.
The #mooreandme protest is fascinating and it's amazing how strong, how relentless, how amazing the women involved in it are. Unfortunately, it is also shocking and saddening just how many individual survivor's stories I've managed to hear in such a short period of time, because that's a lot of rape they're talking about. What is also saddening is how depressingly predictable the response has been: the big important "I'm a leftist so I'd rather sit around patting myself on the back for being less bigoted than Rush Limbaugh than actually learning about social issues, but despite my total lack of research I am still so invested in being Right About This Stuff that I will throw a huge whiny-ass fit if anyone corrects me on anything" rich white dudes--here, Michael Moore and Keith Olbermann, have, respectively, totally ignored it and melodramatically flounced off Twitter. The trolls have come out in full force on their side, responding to Sady & co's points about rape apologia by--what else?--flooding the protesters with crude and violent threats of rape (because nothing says "our side does TOO take rape seriously!" like THREATENING TO RAPE PEOPLE). If Olbermann and Moore are remotely appalled by what their supporters are saying, they haven't said shit. There is currently no available Internet evidence of any trolls using the #mooreandme hashtag to threaten Moore or Olbermann with rape, death, dismemberment, castration, or other acts of severe violence.
HM I WONDER WHICH SIDE OF THIS DEBATE THE DECENT PEOPLE ARE ON
Also, everybody should regularly be reading Tiger Beatdown, if you aren't already.
