Finished Notre-Dame. Go me.

And so now am faced with Massively Difficult Decision... do I start on "A History of God", or "The Divine Comedy"? Or do I give myself a break and read something that doesn't have so much to do with religion?

Before tackling The Divine Comedy, I'd suggest reading Virgil's Aenied if you haven't already. Dante references it pretty heavily, and Virgil himself is one of the major characters in Inferno. I recommend the tanslation that's got side-by-side Italian and English both because the translation is good and because it helps clarify things if you've got even the slightest familiarity with Italian. Also, be aware that Paradiso is pretty boring and that Dante Aligheri was a neurotic little man.

In other news: I wandered over here from religion_etc 'cause you have such interesting things to say. Would you object if I added you to my friends list?

Go ahead. ^.^

My copy of the Divine Comedy is probably about 30% Dante; it's got so many introductions and summaries and explanatory notes that I'd have to be reading with my eyes closed to miss anything. At some point I'd like to get a dual-language translation though; I've never studied Italian but I've studied English, French and Spanish so I've found I can understand simple Italian anyway half the time.

I do intend to read the Aenied at some point, though.
