...please do us a favor and learn to write in proper English. Especially if it's important enough to put in CAPS.

From a Clark e-mail about phone services:

ALL PHONE LINES AND NUMBERS ARE THE PROPERTY OF CLARK UNIVERSITY. FOR THIS REASON YOU MAY NOT EXCEPT COLLECT CALLS, OR CHANGE TO ANY OTHER CALLING PLAN, LONG DISTANCE, OR OTHERWISE. THERE WILL BE CHARGES AND SURCHARGES ASSESSED TO COVER EXPENSES IN THE EVENT THIS OFFICE RECEIVES CHARGES FOR ANY PERSON MAKING SUCH A REQUEST.

Dude. ACCEPT. Basic word. If I weren't allowed to "except" the calls, that would probably mean I wasn't allowed to decide NOT to accept them, if it means anything, which it only sort of does.

So. Claudia is learning to dislike corporate life. Especially the bit that involves spending about three hours of the day commuting. Add that to the eight-hour work day, and that's eleven hours of the day devoted to the fine cause of cancelling surety bonds. (I still don't even quite know what "surety" means... Dad explained it to me once, but it was a while ago.)

Um, so this narrows down the possible window of time when Mom and I are both home and awake to less than four hours a day, let's say three, since Mom goes to bed so early. It's usually less, either because I'm late for some reason (bloodwork, doctor's appointments, Dad running late, traffic...), or Mom goes out to dinner with someone, or more often both. Which results in, among other things, the only teenager in the world who gets a laptop and four days later still has not touched it. I'm sort of technologically inept and therefore need Mom to help me set the thing up, and so, of course, it hasn't happened yet, and probably won't till Sunday, because nothing that requires two people to be on it at the same time EVER gets done in our house, even when I'm not gone for eleven hours a day.

Also, I'm tired. I slept through the zombie attacks at the Wasteland. I'm annoyed. [livejournal.com profile] shadowmanhatta will be even more annoyed.

On the upside, Fast Times at Ridgemont High makes Claudia go :D! Can't believe I'd never seen it before. One of those exceptionally rare movies where the second half is funnier than the first half.

Woo. It's been a busy weekend.

Friday went to work and then up to Massachusetts, stopping at lots of Dunkin Donuts (thank God for Dunkin Donuts!) along the way, and to have dinner at a pizza joint in Connecticut at around nine o'clock. Saturday poked around Clark University, where I ran into a few people I wasn't expecting to, including the older sister of my fellow Jersey girl Adrienne from the Concordia Abroad trip. Saturday evening drove back into town, stopping for about an hour at the Palisades Mall, which is just about the fugliest-lookin' mall I have EVER seen, although it does have everything imaginable in it.

Yesterday got to work at about 9h30, even though I'd been originally down for 7 (Gretchen told me it would be okay if I was late...>.>), and walked out with an incredible amount of food. If the weather tonight is shitty and we cannot go buy pie and sit in front of the junior school and eat it, everyone is invited to come to my house and watch movies or something and eat pie anyway, because I don't know what I'm going to do with it. Or they might be; it is Monday so stuff gets weird.

So far this morning I have dyed a pair of pants black. They are currently in the washer and we shall see if they turn out well or not.

Is it Friday yet?

So it's admissions-decisions week for me.

So far: I got waitlisted at Bryn Mawr, rejected from Sarah Lawrence, and accepted at Clark.

I still have four more colleges to hear from.

I AM DONE WITH MY COLLEGE ESSAYS. All... *counts* eight of them.

Whee.

Last day of vacation. I have two essays to write.

Then I need a vacation to recover from this vacation, but that's not happening.

On the upside, I bought four books yesterday, and got through about a chapter of "Les aventures disastreuses des orphelins Baudelaire: La laboratoire aux serpents" with some help from my rather terrible 1971 French dictionary, but without getting frustrated enough to go online to translate things. This is good for me. I definitely need a better dictionary before I tackle N-D de P in French, but I bought it yesterday anyway.

Middlebury essay DONE.

Man, was that an obnoxious prompt. But I'm actually rather pleased with the result. I had to start it all over again today because the first draft started so I couldn't get it to go where it needed it to go, and sounded too pissy. New one includes liberal doses of poking fun at past self which makes it much more readable than first draft. It's amazing how easy essays are to write once you figure out how to start properly.

I only have ONE MORE APPLICATION due by Friday's due date in Guidance.

And then I have stuff due for the Jan 3 due date but whatever.

Everything is more fun if I talk about it with my mother. Including editing these freaking supplementary college essays. I've decided if I never learn how to develop a plot properly, I'll just publish a book of dippy aphorisms culled from conversations with my mother. Or else I'll write a book with a crappy plot but put in a character whose sole role is to spout dippy aphorisms in order to distract the reader from the lack of plotness, a la Oscar Wilde (except that his plots weren't crappy).

Nothing beats my 5-minute synopsis of Beowulf, though. I wish I had that on tape.

I hate seasonal affective disorder. Abbreviation: "SAD." How apt.

It's nine o'clock, and not only am I feeling all randomly melancholy for no good reason, but I feel like it's really really late and I should have been in bed hours ago. Which is nonsense. And I still have to finish my homework.

I don't know how I'm going to get through the rest of this college-applications nonsense feeling like this as soon as I get out of work.

Wheaton College has a First-Year Seminar about Beowulf, Wagner's Ring Cycle, and Tolkien.

I've decided I like Wheaton.

Am not being a pirate who doesn't do anything this weekend, as am going to BOSTON (yay!) and it is fall. Will be out of school Monday.

Yesterday was one of the most amusing days I've had in a long time.
